Kerala reports 6,049 Covid cases in 24 hours, India’s daily deaths stay below 400 for 11 days

New Delhi: The number of daily deaths being reported in India has remained below 400 for the past 11 days. Active cases have also continued to decline.

However, the number of active cases in Kerala rose to the highest in the country Wednesday, with the state reporting more than 6,000 infections in the last 24 hours.

In the last 24 hours, India reported 23,950 new cases of Covid-19 across the country. This was an increase over Tuesday’s 19,556 — the lowest since July, when the number of daily infections in India crossed the 20,000-mark.

As recoveries continued to outnumber new cases, the number of active cases in India fell further to 2,89,240 Wednesday. Active cases had fallen under three lakh for the first time since July Tuesday.

As many as 333 deaths were reported from across the country in the last 24 hours, which brought the overall coronavirus death toll in India to 1,46,444.

Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) stood at 3.19, still the highest in the country. Meanwhile, Maharashtra — the state with the highest number of Covid-19 deaths — has the second highest CFR of 2.56.

Sikkim follows Maharashtra with a CFR of 2.22. India’s overall case fatality rate since the beginning of the pandemic is at 1.45 now.

In the last 24 hours, 10,98,164 tests were conducted across 1,199 government and 1,077 private laboratories in India.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 16,42,68,721 tests have been carried out.

Positivity rate

After falling to a six-month low Tuesday (1.8 per cent), the test positivity rate (TFR) increased to 2.1 per cent Wednesday. TPR below 10 per cent indicates that a country is conducting enough tests.

Overall test positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is now 6.1 per cent.

As many as 26,895 Covid-19 patients were discharged from across the country. So far, 96,63,382 people have recovered from the infection in India since the beginning of the pandemic.

India has so far reported 1,00,99,066 coronavirus cases since the pandemic. This accounts for nearly 13 per cent of the total coronavirus cases detected worldwide.

States with the highest active cases

Kerala reported 6,049 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. Active cases in the state increased to 61,635, the highest in the country. So far, 7,15,341 cases have been reported from the state. Of these, 2,870 people have died of Covid-19, with 27 reported in the last 24 hours.

Active cases in Maharashtra reduced to 59,502 Wednesday. At 19,02,458, the total number of coronavirus cases in the state is the highest in the country, with 3,106 new infections reported in the last 24 hours.

The state reported 75 deaths in the last 24 hours, which brings the Covid-19 death toll of Maharashtra to 48,876.

In Uttar Pradesh, 1,211 new Covid-19 cases were reported in the last 24 hours. This brings the total case count in the state, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 5,76,832.

As many as 8,224 Covid-19 deaths have been reported in the state since the beginning of the pandemic, with 12 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

The state currently has 16,691 active cases. It overtook West Bengal Wednesday in terms of active cases.

In West Bengal, the active case count dropped to 16,248, with 1,653 new Covid-19 infections reported in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the death toll rose to 9,439, with 38 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 5,39,996 cases were reported in the state.

The active case count for Chhattisgarh dropped to 15,879, with 1,380 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. This brought the total number of cases detected from the state so far to 2,69,857.

With 13 Covid-19 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s coronavirus death toll rose to 3,212.
