India’s R value crosses 1, positivity rate dips to 3.8% & 492 deaths recorded in 24 hours

New Delhi: Eight states and Union Territories account for 70 per cent of the total active coronavirus cases in India, which stand at 4,55,555. These are Maharashtra, Kerala, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 87,18,517 people have recovered from the virus while 1,35,715 have died in the country.

India’s average R value — a measure of the transmission rate of the disease — rose beyond 1 this week, for the first time since mid-September. On Friday, the value was 1.06. The highest R value in India was recorded by Madhya Pradesh at 1.31 while Daman and Diu recorded the lowest at 0.71.

In the last 24 hours, India has recorded 43,082 new cases of Covid-19. About 76.93 per cent of these cases are from 10 states and Union Territories.

India’s active caseload reached 4,55,555 Friday. The present active cases account for 4.89 per cent of the total cases recorded in the country so far.

In the last 24 hours, 492 fatalities were reported in India. Just 10 states and UTs — Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh — account for 83.80 per cent of the total fatalities.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1,35,715 people have succumbed to the infection in India.

Punjab continues to record the highest case fatality rate in India at 3.2 per cent. This is followed by Maharashtra at 2.6 per cent and Sikkim at 2.1 per cent.

India’s average case fatality rate stood at 1.5 per cent.

The total number of tests conducted in the past 24 hours is 11,31,204. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 13,70,62,749 samples have been tested.

Positivity rate

India’s positivity rate decreased to 3.8 per cent Friday from 4.08 per cent Thursday. The decrease in positivity rate could be attributed to the increase in the number of samples tested, in the last 24 hours.

Recovered cases

87,18,517 people have recovered in India since the beginning of the pandemic. The national recovery rate stood at 93.65 per cent. In the last 24 hours, 36,379 recoveries have been reported.

The total Covid cases in India reached 93,09,787 in the last 24 hours. India has the second-highest number of cases in the world after the US.

States with the highest active cases

Maharashtra has the highest number of active cases in India at 85,963. The number of deaths reported in the state stands at 46,813. In the last 24 hours, the state recorded 6,406 cases, which is the highest number of daily cases reported in India Friday.

Kerala has recorded the second-highest number of active cases at 64,497 and has reported 2,149 deaths. It recorded 5,378 cases in the last 24 hours. The total number of cases in the state stands at 5,83,742.

Delhi has recorded the third-highest number of active cases at 38,734. So far, 8,811 deaths had been reported. In the last 24 hours, the national capital recorded 5,475 cases.

Rajasthan has recorded 27,302 active cases and 2,237 deaths, so far. It has reported 3,180 cases in the last 24 hours, which has increased the total number of cases in the state to 2,56,947.

Till now, Uttar Pradesh has recorded 25,422 active cases and 7,674 deaths. It reported 2,904 new cases Thursday.
