India’s Covid deaths fall to lowest in since last May, over 40 lakh given both vaccine doses

New Delhi: In the last 24 hours, the number of Covid-19 deaths reported dropped to the lowest since 1 May while active cases dropped slightly. Meanwhile, over 20 lakh doses of vaccines have been administered while 3 lakh people have received both shots of the Covid-19 vaccine.

A total of 15,388 new cases of Covid-19 has been reported across the country since Monday. Maharashtra alone reported over 56 per cent of the new Covid-19 cases.

Active cases in India dropped slightly to 1,87,462 Tuesday while the percentage of it increased to 1.67 per cent. The highest number of active cases is currently being reported by Maharashtra, followed by Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

In the last 24 hours, 77 people across the country died of Covid-19. This is the lowest number of deaths recorded in a single day since 1 May last year. The overall Covid-19 death toll in India now stands at 1,57,930.

Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi and West Bengal have recorded the highest number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

The overall fatality rate for India has now reduced to 1.40. Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) reduced to 3.13, though the state still has the highest in the country. Maharashtra’s CFR reduced to 2.35 while that of Sikkim is 2.18.

In the last 24 hours, the number of Covid-19 tests conducted increased to 7,48,525. India now has 1,224 government laboratories and 1,183 private laboratories carrying out Covid-19 tests across the country.

A total of 22,27,16,796 tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

With increased number of tests and a drop in the number of cases, the test positivity reduced to 2 per cent in the last 24 hours. The overall positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is five per cent.

As many as 16,596 Covid-19 patients were discharged across India in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,08,99,394.

A total of 2,30,08,733 vaccine doses have been administered in India so far, with 20,19,723 doses administered in the last 24 hours. Of these, 1,89,43,283 are first doses, while 40,65,450 have received the second dose of the vaccine as well.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1,12,44,786 people in India have been infected with Covid-19. The largest number of cases has been reported from Maharashtra so far, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with highest active cases

In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra reported 8,744 new cases of Covid-19. Active cases in the state reduced to 98,859.

A total of 22,28,471 cases of Covid-19 have been reported from the state since the beginning of the pandemic. Of these, 52,500 people have died, with 22 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Active cases in Kerala fell to 39,532 Tuesday. As many as 1,412 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 10,78,739.

Of these, 4,312 people have died, with 12 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Active cases in Punjab increased to 8,020, with 1,229 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the last 24 hours. This takes the total number of cases detected in the state to 1,89,620.

The Covid-19 death toll in Punjab increased to 5,941, with 14 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In Karnataka, active cases declined to 6,834. With 436 new cases detected since Monday, a total of 9,55,451 Covid-19 cases have been reported from the state.

Of these, 12,367 people have died, with five deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In Tamil Nadu, active cases increased to 4,018, with 557 new cases of Covid detected in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of cases detected to 8,55,677.

With one death reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll stands at 12,521.
