India’s active Covid cases cross 1.68 lakh, over 1.48 crore vaccine doses administered

New Delhi: Active cases in India saw a small drop Tuesday as new cases reported in the last 24 hours were just over 12,000. As the number of tests increased to over 7 lakh, test positivity rate also declined to 1.6 per cent.

Over 1.48 crore vaccine doses have been administered across the country since the vaccination drive began in January.

Active cases in India declined to 1,68,358 Tuesday. Maharashtra now has the highest number of active cases in the country, followed by Kerala, Karnataka, Punjab and Tamil Nadu.

In the last 24 hours, 91 people have died due to Covid-19 across the country, taking the overall death toll to 1,57,248. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi and West Bengal have recorded the highest number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

The overall fatality rate for India is now 1.42. Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) is 3.20 — the highest in the country. Maharashtra’s CFR is 2.41, while Sikkim’s is 2.19.

In the last 24 hours, the number of Covid-19 tests conducted across 1,222 government laboratories and 1,175 private laboratories increased to 7,59,283.

As many as 21,76,18,057 tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

The daily test positivity rate for India has dropped to 1.6 per cent in the last 24 hours as the number of tests conducted increased and the number of new cases declined.

The overall positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is 5.1 per cent.

Recovered cases

As many as 12,464 Covid-19 patients were discharged across India in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of Covid-19 recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,07,98,921.

A total of 1,48,54,136 vaccine doses have been administered in India so far, with 5,52,639 doses administered in the last 24 hours. Of these, 1,22,56,337 are first doses, while 25,97,799 have received the second dose of the vaccine.

As many as 1,11,24,527 people in India have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. The largest number of cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with the highest active cases

Maharashtra reported 6,397 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total active case count in the state to 78,825. Active cases in the state have been increasing for the past few days.

A total of 21,61,467 people in the state have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. As many as 52,184 people have died of Covid-19 in the state, with 30 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Active cases in Kerala dropped to 48,159 Tuesday, with 1,938 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of cases reported in the state to 10,61,341.

As many as 4,210 people have died of Covid-19 in the state, of which 13 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

Active cases in Karnataka increased to 5,843 Tuesday, with 349 cases reported in the last 24 hours.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 9,51,600 Covid-19 cases have been reported from the state. Karnataka’s death toll increased to 12,336,with five deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In Punjab, active cases have increased to 4,853, with 633 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. This takes the total number of cases detected in the state to 1,82,809.

As many as 18 deaths were reported from the state in the last 24 hours, which brings the the Covid-19 death toll in Punjab to 5,850.

Tamil Nadu’s active case number dropped to 4,009 Tuesday, with 474 new cases of Covid-19 detected in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of cases detected from the state to 8,52,016.

With five deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll stands at 12,501.
