India’s active cases cross 6-lakh mark after 8 months, over 11 lakh tests in 24 hours

New Delhi: India’s active case count has crossed 6 lakhs after over 81,000 cases were reported in the past 24 hours. The first time active cases had crossed the 6-lakh mark was on 7 August 2020.

The daily deaths reported on 7 August 2020 was 886, which is 1.8 times the number of deaths reported in the last 24 hours — 469.

The number of daily positives were lower on 7 August last year, at 61,537 cases, as opposed to the 81,466 people who tested positive in the past day.

This could be due to the fact that only 6,39,042 tests were conducted on 7 August while more than 11 lakh tests have been conducted in the last 24 hours.

As a result, the test positivity was also higher at the time at 9.7 per cent. Meanwhile, at present, the test positivity is relatively lower at 7.3 per cent.

Over the last 24 hours, 81,466 people tested positive for Covid-19 across the country. This is the highest number of cases reported in a single day since 1 October 2020.

Active cases in India increased to 6,14,696 in the past 24 hours. Maharashtra continues to have the highest share of active cases in the country, followed by Karnataka. Chhattisgarh now has the third-highest active cases in the country.

Over the last 24 hours, 469 deaths have been reported in India. This has brought the country’s Covid death toll to 1,63,396.

The overall fatality rate for India is 1.33. Punjab’s case fatality reduced to 2.85, but the state remains to have the highest rate in the country. Maharashtra’s CFR reduced to 1.92 while that of Sikkim is 2.16.

The rapid drop in CFR can be attributed to the increase in the percentage of active cases across India.

Daily vaccinations

Vaccinations opened up to everyone over the age of 45 Thursday. As many as 36,71,242 doses of vaccines were administered across the country in the last 24 hours. So far 6,87,89,138 vaccine doses have been administered in India.

So far, 96,40,340 people have received both doses of the vaccine in India.

In the last 24 hours, 11,13,966 Covid-19 tests were carried out across 1,228 government laboratories and 1,212 private laboratories in the country. Over 24.5 crore tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

The test positivity rate increased to 7.3 per cent in the last 24 hours. The overall positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is 4.9 per cent.

Recovered cases

As many as 50,356 Covid-19 patients have been discharged across hospitals in India in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,15,25,039.

A total of 1,23,03,131 people in India have been infected with Covid-19. The highest number of cases have been from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with highest active cases

Active cases in Maharashtra increased to 3,67,897, with 43,183 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours.

A total of 28,56,163 people have been infected with Covid-19 in the state. Of these, 54,898 people have died, with 249 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

With 4,234 new cases in the last 24 hours, active cases in Karnataka increased to 30,884.

So far, a total of 10,01,238 Covid-19 cases have been reported from the state. With 18 deaths in the last 24 hours, the death toll increased to 12,585.

Chhattisgarh now has the third-highest active cases in the country. With 4,617 new cases in the last 24 hours, active cases in the state rose to 28,987.

A total of 3,53,804 cases have been detected from the state and as many as 34 Covid-19 patients have died in the state in the last 24 hours. This has taken the death toll in the state to 4,204.

In Kerala, active Covid-19 cases increased to 26,511, with 2,798 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

This has taken the total number of cases detected from the state to 11,27,382 since the beginning of the pandemic. With 11 deaths in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll increased to 4,632.

In Punjab, active cases increased to 24,644, with 3,161 new cases of Covid-19 reported in the last 24 hours.

A total of 2,42,895 people in the state have tested positive since the beginning of the pandemic. With 58 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll increased to 6,926.
