India tests over 10 lakh samples in 24 hrs, but positivity rate & daily cases rise

New Delhi: In the last 24 hours, more than 10 lakh samples were tested across India but despite this, the test positivity rate of the country saw a slight increase.

The number of deaths reported over the last 24 hours once again increased to over 500.

Daily cases

In the last 24 hours, 36,604 new cases of Covid-19 were detected. The number of cases saw a slight increase with the rise in the number of tests, compared to yesterday. On Tuesday, 31,118 new cases were recorded.

Active cases

The number of total active cases in India continue to decline with the number reducing to 4,28,644 Wednesday. This accounts for 4.51 per cent of the total cases of coronavirus detected in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The number of Covid-19 deaths reported across India in the last 24 hours was 501, which has brought the total reported deaths in the country, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 1,38,122.

The deaths in India account for just over 9 per cent of the global coronavirus toll.

With a case fatality rate of 3.2 per cent, Punjab continues to have the highest death rate in the country. Maharashtra — which has recorded the highest number of deaths in the country — has the second-highest CFR at 2.6 per cent.

Sikkim’s CFR stands at 2.2 per cent, the third-highest in the country. India’s overall case fatality rate is now 1.45 per cent.

Daily tests

Across 1,176 government laboratories and 996 private laboratories in the country, 10,96,651 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours.

So far, 14,24,45,949 Covid tests have been carried out in India since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

The test positivity rate, in the last 24 hours, has increased slightly to 3.3 per cent.

The overall TPR for India, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, has reduced to 6.6 per cent.

Recovered cases

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 89,32,647 patients in India have recovered from the infection. This accounts for just over 20 per cent of the total recoveries in the world.

As many as 43,062 people have recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours.

In India, 94,99,413 people have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic — the second-highest in the world.

States with highest active cases

Maharashtra’s active caseload increased to 90,168 Wednesday and the state continues to have the highest number of active Covid-19 cases.

In the last 24 hours, 4,930 people tested positive for the disease, which has brought the total number cases detected from the state to 18,28,826.

Of these, 47,246 patients have died, with 95 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Kerala’s active caseload decreased to 61,223 Wednesday.

However, there was a spike in the number of new cases detected over the last 24 hours with 5,375 cases recorded. This is the highest among the top five states with active cases.

So far 6,08,357 people have been infected in the state, of which 2,270 people have died. In the last 24 hours, 26 deaths were reported.

Delhi saw 4,006 new Covid-19 cases and 86 deaths in the last 24 hours. So far, there have been a total of 5,74,380 cases in Delhi, of which 31,769 are active while 9,260 people have died.

In Rajasthan, a total of 2,70,410 people have been infected with the virus. Of these, 27,974 cases are active, with 2,347 new cases detected in the last 24 hours.

As many as 19 patients died in the state in the last 24 hours, which has brought the total death toll of the state to 2,331.

West Bengal reported 3,315 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, which has brought the total number of cases in the state to 4,86,799.

Of these, 24,221 cases are active, while 8,476 people have succumbed to Covid-19.

In the last 24 hours, 52 deaths have been reported from the state.
