986 new Covid deaths & 72,049 fresh cases in last 24 hours, positivity rate rises to 6%

New Delhi: After a five-day decrease in daily deaths, India Wednesday reported 986 new casualties. The number of deaths Tuesday were 884. The number of new cases also increased, causing the test positivity rate to go up to six per cent from a three-month low of 5.6 reported Tuesday.

Active cases

The number of active cases in India have stayed below the 10-lakh mark in the past two weeks, and continues to decrease. The total number of active cases Wednesday was 9,07,883. It is 11,140 less than Tuesday.

In the last 24 hours, India has registered 986 Covid deaths, which is higher than what was reported Tuesday. Daily deaths had been declining over the last five days. The total number of reported deaths from Covid-19 in India now stands at 1,04,555.

Punjab continues to report the highest case fatality rate (CFR) in the country — 3.07. This is almost twice the national average of 1.55. Maharashtra and Gujarat are also reporting high CFR — 2.64 and 2.42 respectively. On the other hand, Kerala, the state which has the third highest number of active case, has a very low CFR of 0.36.

A total of 11,99,857 tests were done in 1,101 government and 768 private labs across the country in the past 24 hours. The total number of tests done till date stands at 8,22,71,654.

Positivity rate

The test positivity rate increased in the last 24 hours to remain at six per cent Wednesday. This comes just a day after the country saw the lowest positivity rate of 5.6 per cent Tuesday, since 9 June.

Recovered cases

A total of 82,203 recoveries were registered in the last 24 hours, which brought the recovery rate to about 85.02 per cent — a slight increase from 84.70 per cent Tuesday. As many as 57,44,693 Covid-19 patients have recovered from the infection in India over the course of the pandemic. It is the highest number of recoveries in the world.

So far, India has had a total of 67,57,131 Covid-19 cases. This included, a total of 72,049 new confirmed cases in the last 24 hours in the country, which is 10,782 more cases than Tuesday.

High burden states

In Maharashtra, total Covid-19 cases stand at 14,65,911, with 12,258 new cases added in the last 24 hours. The state has seen 38,717 deaths from Covid-19 so far, including 370 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Karnataka is the state with the second highest burden of active cases. Over the last 24 hours, the state saw 9,993 fresh cases, bringing the total number to 6,57,705. Of these, 1,15,170 are active cases.

Tamil Nadu has 45,279 active Covid-19 cases, with 5,017 new cases in the last 24 hours. A total of 71 people died in the state in the last 24 hours due to Covid-19. So far, the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu is 6,30,408 and deaths stand at 9,917.

Andhra Pradesh reported 5,795 new cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to 7,29,307 in the state. With 33 Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, the state’s death toll now stands at 6,052.

Uttar Pradesh reported 3,663 new cases and 61 deaths in the last 24 hours. The state currently has 44,031 active cases, while the total number of confirmed cases from the state so far stands at 4,20,937. The state’s Covid-19 death toll stands at 6,153.

Tests and positive cases

Maharashtra’s test positivity rate continued to be about 14 per cent Wednesday. This is worrisome because the state has the highest number of active cases, and test positivity rate above 10 per cent indicates that the state is not conducting enough tests.

On the other hand, Uttar Pradesh conducted over 1.56 lakh tests and reported 3,663 positive cases — which brings its test positivity rate to just over 2 per cent.
