India’s total Covid tally crosses 80-lakh mark, daily cases rise for second consecutive day

New Delhi: The total number of coronavirus cases in India crossed the 80-lakh mark Thursday. There was also a spike in the daily Covid cases for the second day in a row, even though total active cases continue to decline.

The increase in daily cases has caused a small increase in the test positivity rate, although the metric remains well below 10 per cent as desired.

Daily Cases

The number of new Covid cases in a single day has been increasing for the past two days. India reported 49,881 new cases in the last 24 hours. This is 5,988 more cases than Wednesday.

Active cases

The total number of active Covid cases in India fell to 6,03,687, which accounts for 7.51 per cent of the total cases detected in the country so far. The number of active cases have been reducing since mid-September.

Number of deaths

The number of deaths reported, in the last 24 hours, increased to 517 Thursday from 508 deaths Wednesday. This has brought the total death toll to 1,20,527. This account’s for nearly 10.2 per cent of the global Covid deaths.

Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) remains at 3.14 — the highest in the country. At 2.62 and 2.18, respectively, Maharashtra and Gujarat continue to record high fatality rates.

Despite having the second-highest burden of active cases, Kerala maintains a low CFR of 0.34. The overall CFR for India is now 1.50.

Over the last 24 hours, 10,75,760 Covid tests were conducted across 1,127 government labs and 891 private laboratories across the country. A total of 10,65,63,440 tests have been conducted in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

Since there was a spike in cases in the past 24 hours, the daily test positivity rate (TPR) also increased marginally to 4.6 per cent.

The overall TPR, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is now 7.5 per cent.

Recovered cases

In the last 24 hours, as many as 56,480 people have recovered from Covid-19 — bringing the total number of recoveries to 73,15,989. India’s recovery rate now stands at 90.99 per cent, a slight increase from 90.85 per cent Wednesday.

India crossed the 80-lakh mark Thursday. The total coronavirus cases reported in the country, since the beginning of the pandemic, now stands at 80,40,203.

This accounts for 17.9 per cent of the total coronavirus cases recorded across the world, so far.

High-burden states

In Maharashtra, a total of 16,60,766 coronavirus cases have been reported over the course of the pandemic. Of these, 1,30,286 are active cases, while 43,554 people have died in the state.

In the last 24 hours, 6,738 people have tested positive for Covid-19, while 91 deaths were reported.

Karnataka has 68,180 active cases, with 3,146 people testing positive for Covid in the last 24 hours.

The state has had 8,12,784 cases so far. In the last 24 hours, 55 people succumbed to the infection in the state, bringing the death toll to 11,046.

In Tamil Nadu, 35 people died of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total toll to 11,018. The state has reported 7,16,751 cases so far and of these, 26,356 are active cases. In the last 24 hours, 2,516 people tested positive.

Andhra Pradesh has recorded 26,622 active Covid cases and 2,949 people tested positive in the last 24 hours.

So far, 6,643 people have died in the state, with 18 deaths reported in the state in the last 24 hours. As many as 8,14,774 people have been infected over the course of the pandemic.

In Uttar Pradesh, a total of 4,76,034 Covid cases have been reported since the beginning of the pandemic. Of these, 25,487 are active cases, while 6,958 people have died from the disease so far.

In the last 24 hours, 2,049 people tested positive while 18 people died in UP.

In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra’s test positivity rate increased to 9.8 per cent from 7.7 per cent. This is disturbing news as a TPR of above 10 per cent indicates that the state is not conducting enough tests.

Uttar Pradesh has the lowest TPR among the high-burden states, which reduced to 1.3 per cent Thursday.
