Daily Covid cases dip to 3-month low at 36,470, death toll stays below 500 for a second day

New Delhi: In the last 24 hours, the number of new Covid-19 patients fell under 40,000 for the first time in over three months. India also reported a low positivity rate of 3.8 per cent Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the number of daily deaths recorded in India remained under 500 for the second consecutive day.

India reported 36,470 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. This is the lowest number of positives in a single day since 17 July, when India reported 34,884 cases.

The number of active Covid cases has fallen under the 6.5-lakh mark. The total number of active cases now stands at 6,25,857, which accounts for 7.88 per cent of the total cases detected in the country so far.

For the second consecutive day, the number of deaths reported remained under 500. In the last 24 hours, 488 people succumbed to the infection. India’s total Covid death toll now stands at 1,19,502.

Mortality rate

The case fatality rate (CFR) in Punjab remains the highest in the country at 3.14, while the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat are the second and third-worst performing states.

While Maharashtra’s CFR remains steady 2.63, Gujarat’s CFR has dropped to 2.20.

Kerala, the state with the second-highest burden of active cases, maintains a low CFR of 0.34. The overall CFR for India is now 1.50.

Daily tests

In the past week, the daily testing numbers crossed the 14-lakh mark frequently, however, the daily tests conducted so far have come down considerably. About 9,58,116 Covid tests were conducted across 1,126 government laboratories and 883 private laboratories in the country in the last 24 hours.

A total of 10,44,20,894 tests were conducted in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

The daily test positivity rate reduced to 3.8 per cent from 4.8 per cent Monday. The overall positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is now about 7.6 per cent.

Recovered cases

In the last 24 hours, 63,842 people have recovered from Covid-19, bringing the total number of recoveries to 72,01,070.

India’s recovery rate has increased marginally to 90.62 per cent Tuesday.

The total number of confirmed cases in India now stands at 79,46,429 — second only to the US. This accounts for over 18 per cent of the total coronavirus cases recorded across the world so far.

High-burden states

In Maharashtra, 3,645 new cases were detected in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases detected in the state to 16,48,665. Of these, 1,34,657 are active — the highest across the country.

In the past 24 hours, 84 people died in the state, which has increased the state’s death toll to 43,348. This accounts for more than one-third of the total deaths in India, so far.

Karnataka has reported 8,05,947 cases over the course of the pandemic. Of these, 10,947 people have died, while 75,442 cases are still active.

The state reported 3,130 new cases and 42 deaths in the last 24 hours.

In Tamil Nadu, 2,708 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the total case count in the state to 7,11,713. Of these, 29,268 are active cases.

A total of 10,956 deaths have been reported in the state and 32 people succumbed to the infection in the last 24 hours.

Andhra Pradesh has reported 1,910 cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the state’s active cases to 28,770. As many as 19 people have died in the last 24 hours and the state’s death toll is at 6,606.

A total of 8,08,924 cases have been reported in Andhra Pradesh since the beginning of the pandemic.

In Uttar Pradesh, 4,72,077 cases of coronavirus have been reported since the beginning of the pandemic. The state has 26,652 active cases, while a total of 6,904 people have died in the state. As many as 22 deaths were reported from the state in the last 24 hours.

Tests and positive cases

In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra’s test positivity rate (TPR) reduced drastically from 17.9 per cent Monday to 6.2 per cent Tuesday.

Uttar Pradesh continues to have the lowest TPR among the high-burden states at 1.7 per cent.
