Weekend testing dip pushes India’s positivity rate to 5.1%, case fatality rate stays at 1.5%

New Delhi: India reported 44,059 cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours and the country’s current active caseload makes up just 4.85 per cent of the total cases recorded. The recovery rate in India is also above 93 per cent and 41,024 patients recovered in the last 24 hours.

While the country’s case fatality rate has been stable, the test positivity rate increased to 5.1 per cent, as of Monday.

In the last 24 hours, 44,059 people tested positive for Covid-19. In the last 16 days, India has been recording less than 50,000 cases everyday. Ten states and Union Territories have contributed 78.74 per cent of the new cases.

India’s total active caseload is now at 4,43,486 cases. The gap between recovered cases and active cases is increasing steadily and stands at 81,19,155, currently.

In the last 24 hours, 511 people succumbed to Covid-19 and 74.95 per cent of these fatalities were registered in 10 states and Union Territories.

So far, India’s Covid death toll stands at 1,33,738.

Punjab continues to record the highest case fatality rate in India at 3.2 per cent. This is followed by Maharashtra at 2.6 per cent and Sikkim at 2.1 per cent.

India’s average case fatality rate stands at 1.5 per cent and has remained consistent since Friday.

In the last 24 hours, 8,49,596 Covid-19 tests were conducted across 1,158 government laboratories and 958 private laboratories in the country — a significant drop from Friday as is characteristic of weekends. Till date, India has collected 13,25,82,730 samples for testing.

India’s positivity rate rose to 5.1 per cent Monday due to the dip in weekend testing. This was a significant increase from Friday, when India recorded a positivity rate of 4.2 per cent.

The country registered 41,024 recoveries in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries to 85,62,641. India’s recovery rate improved to 93.68 per cent Monday from 93.60 per cent Friday.

The total Covid cases in India, as of Monday, stands at 91,39,865. India has the second-highest number of Covid cases in the world after the US.

States with the highest active cases

Maharashtra has recorded the highest active caseload in India at 81,512 cases. In the last 24 hours, it recorded 5,753 cases, bringing the total case tally in the state to 17,80,208 cases. More than 46,000 people have died in the state.

Kerala, with 65,864 cases, has the second-highest active cases in India. It has recorded a total 5,62,696 cases till date and 2,050 have died in the state. In the last 24 hours, Kerala has reported 5,254 cases.

Delhi has recorded 40,212 active cases of Covid-19 till date and reported 6,746 new cases in the last 24 hours.

West Bengal has reported 25,207 active cases and has registered a total of 4,56,361 cases till date. In the last 24 hours, it recorded 3,591 cases. A total of 8,025 people have died from the virus.

Karnataka has reported 24,868 active cases with 1,704 cases reported in the last 24 hours. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 8,73,046 cases have been registered in the state and 11,654 people died.
