India’s daily cases dip below 40,000, positivity rate drops to 3.6%, 448 deaths in 24 hrs

New Delhi: The number of new Covid-19 cases detected in the last 24 hours, dipped to under 40,000 Tuesday. The test positivity rate also fell to 3.6 per cent.

For two consecutive days, the number of daily deaths has remained under 500.

Daily Cases

In the last 24 hours, 38,073 people tested positive for Covid-19 across the country. For the past several weeks now, the number of daily positive cases has been been declining.

The total number of active Covid cases in India has now declined to 5,05,265. This accounts for 5.88 per cent of the total cases detected in India so far.

Over the last 24 hours, 448 people in the country succumbed to Covid-19. This brings the total death toll in India to 1,27,059. The number of deaths in India account for a little over 10 per cent of the global toll.

The overall case fatality rate (CFR) in India has further reduced to 1.48.

With a case fatality rate of 3.14, Punjab continues to report the highest death rate in the country. Maharashtra and Gujarat also maintain high CFRs of 2.63 and 2.07, respectively. However, unlike Punjab, both states have been seeing a small but steady decline in the rate.

Kerala, the state with the second-highest burden of active cases, maintains a low CFR of 0.35.

A total of 11,96,15,857 Covid-19 tests have been conducted in the country since the beginning of the pandemic. Of these, 10,43,665 Covid-19 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours across 1,142 government laboratories and 938 private laboratories.

The test positivity rate (TPR) reduced to 3.6 per cent in the last 24 hours. The overall TPR for India, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is 7.1 per cent.

Recovered cases

As many as 42,033 people have recovered in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries in India since the beginning of the pandemic to 79,59,406.

This has also increased India’s recovery rate to 92.64 per cent. A little over 22 per cent of the world’s Covid-19 recoveries are from India.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 85,91,730 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the country — the second highest in the world after the US. India’s total cases account for 16.8 per cent of the total cases worldwide.

High-burden states

Maharashtra continues to have the highest number of active cases among Indian states. As of Tuesday, 1,00,488 cases of Covid-19 are active in the state.

So far, a total of 17,23,135 people have been infected by the virus. Of these 45,325 people have died from the infection.

In the last 24 hour, 3,277 people have tested positive for the virus in the state while 125 people have died.

Karnataka reported 1,963 new cases of Covid-19 and 19 deaths in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of cases detected in the state, so far to 8,48,850, while the death toll is 11,410.

The state has 32,955 active cases as of Tuesday.

In Tamil Nadu, 7,46,079 people have tested positive for Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. Of these, 18,825 cases are active, while 11,362 people have died so far.

About 2,257 people have tested positive for the disease in the last 24 hours, while 18 people have died.

Andhra Pradesh has 21,235 active cases of coronavirus as of Tuesday. A total of 8,44,359 Covid-19 cases have been reported from the state so far, of which 6,802 people have died.

In the last 24 hours, 1,392 new cases of Covid-19 have been reported, along with 11 deaths.

In Uttar Pradesh, 1,636 new Covid cases have been detected in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of positive cases in the state to 4,99,199.

The state’s death toll stands at 7,231, with 25 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

The test positivity rate for Maharashtra has dropped to 5.5 per cent, while in Tamil Nadu the rate is 3 per cent.

Uttar Pradesh, which is conducting over 1 lakh tests every day, has a TPR of 1.1 per cent.
