Daily Covid deaths fall to 201, but mortality rate in Punjab continues to climb

New Delhi: The number of deaths recorded in the last 24 hours across India reduced to 201 Tuesday. In Punjab, however, the case fatality rate has further increased to 3.22. This is over twice the national average of the country.

In the last 24 hours, 16,375 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded. This is the second day in a row that cases remained under 17,000.

The number of active cases in India is now 2,31,036. This accounts for 2.23 per cent of the total number of coronavirus cases recorded in India so far.

In the last 24 hours, 201 Covid-19 patients died across the country, bringing the total death toll in India to 1,49,850, since the beginning of the pandemic. Nearly a third of the total deaths in India have been reported from Maharashtra.

Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR), which is the highest in the country, has further increased to 3.22. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s CFR is now 2.55. Sikkim’s fatality rate stood at 2.17, while India’s overall case fatality rate is at 1.45.

The number of tests conducted across 1,201 government laboratories and 1,100 private laboratories increased to 8,96,236.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 17,65,31,997 tests have been carried out in India.

The test positivity rate reduced to 1.8 per cent Tuesday. However, overall test positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is now 5.8 per cent.

In the last 24 hours, 29,091 people recovered from Covid-19 across the country. This brought the number of recoveries across the country, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 99,75,958. The recovery rate in India has now increased to 96.32 per cent.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, as many as 1,03,56,844 people have been infected with Covid-19. The largest number of cases so far have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

States with the highest active cases

Active cases in Kerala reduced to 63,324 Tuesday. This is more than a fourth of the total number of active cases in India. The number of people who tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours stood at 3,021.

A total of 7,78,873 people have been infected with the disease since the beginning of the pandemic in Kerala.

Of these, 3160 people have died, with 19 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Maharashtra also saw a fall in its active case count to 49,955. In the last 24 hours, the state reported 4,875 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of cases detected from the state to 19,47,011.

The state reported 29 Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, which brought the total death toll to 49,695, since the beginning of the pandemic.

In Uttar Pradesh, 711 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, which brought the total number of cases in the state to 5,88,882. Of these, 12,505 were active cases, as of Tuesday.

As many as 8,413 people in the state have succumbed to the infection so far. In the last 24 hours, 10 deaths were reported from the state.

Karnataka reported 600 new Covid-19 infections in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases from the state to 9,22,538.

Of these, 10,226 cases are active, while 12,110 people have died so far. In the last 24 hours, three deaths were reported from the state.

As of Tuesday, Chhattisgarh has the fifth-highest number of active Covid-19 cases in the country. There are 9,766 active Covid-19 cases in the state, with 1,147 cases reported in the last 24 hours.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the state has reported 2,83,515 Covid-19 cases. Of these, 3,412 people have died. In the last 24 hours, 12 Covid-19 deaths were reported from the state.
