Daily Covid cases hit 4-month low at 30,548, Kerala overtakes UP as fifth worst-affected state

New Delhi: In the last 24 hours, the number of new Covid-19 cases dropped to a four-month low of 30,548, even as the total deaths crossed the 1.3-lakh mark.

Meanwhile, Kerala has overtaken Uttar Pradesh in the total number of Covid-19 cases registered in the state, making it the fifth worst-affected state in the country.

In the last 24 hours, 30,548 people tested positive for Covid-19, which is the lowest number of cases reported in a single day since 14 July.

The number of daily cases has been fluctuating between 36,000 and 50,000 since 25 October.

The number of total active cases in India fell to 4,65,478, which accounts for 5.26 per cent of the total coronavirus cases detected in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

India’s Covid-19 death toll now stands at 1,30,070, with 435 fatalities recorded in the last 24 hours.

For Punjab, the case fatality rate continues to be the highest in the country at 3.14. Maharashtra and Gujarat also have high CFRs of 2.63 and 2.01, respectively.

Kerala, which is now among the top five states with a high disease burden in the country, maintains a low CFR of 0.35. However, it has increased from 0.34 last week. India’s overall case fatality rate has reduced to 1.47.

Due to Diwali and the general lag in testing over the weekend, the number of Covid tests conducted in the last 24 hours fell to 8,61,706.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 12,56,98,525 Covid-19 tests have been carried out across 1,146 government laboratories and 950 private laboratories in the country.

Positivity rate

In the last 24 hours, the test positivity rate was about 3.5 per cent. The overall TPR for India, which is calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, stands at 7.0 per cent.

Recovered cases

As many as 43,851 people recovered from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 82,49,579.

India has the highest number of Covid recoveries in the world and accounts for 21.6 per cent (over a fifth) of the total global recoveries.

So far, 88,45,127 people in India have tested positive for Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. India continues to have the second-highest cases in the world, after the US.

High-burden states

Maharashtra reported 2,544 new Covid cases and 105 deaths in the last 24 hours.

With a total of 17,47,242 people testing positive for the disease since the beginning of the pandemic, the state has the highest number of cases so far.

Of these, 85,889 are active cases while 45,974 people have died from the disease.

In Karnataka, 8,61,647 people have been infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, of which 11,529 people have died. The number of active cases in the state is now at 27,165.

In the last 24 hours, 1,565 new cases were detected in the state while 17 people died.

Tamil Nadu has an active caseload of 16,441, while the state’s death toll stands at 11,478.

As many as 1,819 people tested positive while 12 people have died, in the last 24 hours.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 7,58,191 people have tested positive for the virus in the state.

In Andhra Pradesh, the total number of Covid-19 cases detected till date is 8,54,011, with 1,056 people testing positive in the last 24 hours.

With 14 deaths in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll stands at 6,868.

Kerala has overtaken Uttar Pradesh after registering the fifth-highest number of Covid cases in the country. As of Monday, 5,24,998 people in the state have been infected with Covid-19.

Of these, 74,922 cases are active while 1,869 deaths have been reported since the beginning of the pandemic.

In the last 24 hours, 4,481 people have tested positive for the virus, while 21 people have died.

Maharashtra’s test positivity rate has once again increased to 10.6 per cent as testing reduced to less than half over the Diwali weekend. A TPR of above 10 per cent indicates that the state is not conducting enough testing.

Kerala also has a high TPR of 9.9 per cent.

Meanwhile, Karnataka has the lowest TPR among the worst-affected states at 1.5 per cent.
