Active cases rise above 1.55 lakh in India, over 1.34 crore vaccine doses administered so far

New Delhi: Active cases of Covid-19 continue to rise in India, with Maharashtra reporting the highest number of daily cases in the country for a second day in a row.

India’s R value has also increased to 1.02, crossing the threshold 1 for the first time since November.

For the first time since November, India’s effective reproduction number (R) for Covid-19 has increased above 1. The value is estimated to be 1.02 this week. R value needs to be sustained below 1 for the pandemic to end.

As many as 16,577 people tested positive for Covid-19 across the country in the last 24 hours. Over 8,700 new cases were detected in Maharashtra alone, while Kerala reported more than 3,600 new cases.

Active cases in India increased to 1,55,986 in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra now has the highest number of active cases in the country, followed by Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Punjab.

In the past 24 hours, 120 people have died of Covid-19 across the country. This takes the country’s overall death toll to 1,56,825. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi and West Bengal have recorded the highest number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

The overall fatality rate for India is now 1.42. Punjab’s case fatality rate is 3.21 — the highest in the country. Maharashtra’s CFR is 2.44, while Sikkim’s fatality rate stands at 2.20.

In the last 24 hours, a total of 8,31,807 Covid-19 tests were conducted across 1,221 government laboratories and 1,175 private laboratories. Over 21.4 crore tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

The daily test positivity rate for India has reduced to 1.9 per cent for the last 24 hours as the number of tests conducted increased. The overall positivity, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is 5.1 per cent.

Recovered cases

As many as 12,179 Covid-19 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,07,50,680.

A total of 1,34,72,643 vaccine doses have been administered in India so far, and 8,01,480 of them were given in the last 24 hours. As many as 1,14,39,649 have received the first dose, while 20,32,994 have received the second dose of the vaccine.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1,10,63,491 people in India have been infected with Covid-19. The highest number of cases have been reported from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

States with highest active cases

Maharashtra has the highest number of active cases in the country, and the numbers are steadily rising. With 8,702 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s active case count increased to 65,461.

A total of 21,29,821 people have been infected in the state since the beginning of the pandemic, of which 51,993 people have died.

In the last 24 hours, the state reported 56 deaths.

Active cases in Kerala reduced to 52,164. In the past 24 hours, 3,677 new cases were reported in the state, bringing the total number of cases in Kerala to 10,48,686.

As many as 4,150 people have died of Covid in the state, with 14 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Active cases in Karnataka reduced to 5,595, with 453 cases reported in the last 24 hours.

The state reported seven Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 12,316. A total of 9,49,636 people have been infected in the state.

Tamil Nadu has reported 467 new cases of Covid in the last 24 hours, which brings the total number of cases detected from the state to 8,50,096. The state has 4,053 active cases as of Friday.

With five deaths reported since yesterday, the state’s Covid-19 death toll stands at 12,483.

Punjab reported 563 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases detected in the state to 1,80,382. Active cases in the state stand at 3,870.

As many as 5,799 people in the state have lost their lives to Covid in the state since the beginning of the pandemic, with 13 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.
