Active cases rise above 1.5 lakh in India, 1.08 crore vaccine doses administered so far

New Delhi: Active cases in India increased to over 1.5 lakh Monday, after Covid-19 infections began rising since last week. Maharashtra has been seeing the highest spike in new cases.

Meanwhile, over 1.08 crore doses of vaccines have been administered to healthcare and frontline workers in India so far.

In the last 24 hours, as many as 14,199 people tested positive for Covid-19 across the country. The maximum number of new cases were detected from Maharashtra.

Active cases in India have been increasing over the past one week. On Monday, the active cases increased to 1,50,055.

India has reported 83 Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours. This takes the country’s overall toll to 1,56,385. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi and West Bengal have recorded the highest number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

The overall fatality rate for India has dropped to 1.42. Punjab’s case fatality rate (CFR) has reduced slightly to 3.22 — which is still the highest in the country. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s CFR is the second highest at 2.46 and Sikkim’s fatality rate is 2.20.

In the last 24 hours, a total of 6,20,216 Covid-19 tests were conducted across 1,220 government laboratories and 1,173 private laboratories. Over 21 crore tests have been carried out in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

The daily test positivity rate for India increased to 2.2 per cent in the last 24 hours. The overall positivity rate, calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, is 5.2 per cent.

As many as 9,695 Covid-19 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of Covid-19 recoveries, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 1,06,99,410.

A total of 1,08,38,323 vaccine doses have been administered in India so far till Sunday. These include 63,52,713 first doses to healthcare workers, 8,73,940 second doses to healthcare workers, and 36,11,670 first doses to frontline workers.

While the countrywide vaccination drive was rolled out on 16 January, immunisation of the frontline workers began only from 2 February.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 1,10,05,850 people in India have been infected with Covid-19. The highest number of cases reported so far are from Maharashtra, followed by Kerala and Karnataka.

Active cases in Kerala reduced to 58,593 Monday, with 4,070 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

A total of 10,34,657 cases of Covid-19 have been detected from the state since the beginning of the pandemic. With 15 deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 4,089.

Maharashtra reported 6,971 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours and the state’s active cases rose to 54,149 Monday.

A total of 51,788 people in the state have died of Covid-19 so far, with 35 Covid-19 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

Active cases in Karnataka also increased Monday, standing at 6,055, with 413 new Covid-19 infections reported in the last 24 hours. This brings the total infections detected in the state, since the beginning of the pandemic, to 9,48,149.

With two deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s total death count increased to 12,294.

Tamil Nadu has 4,109 active Covid-19 cases as of Monday, with 413 new infections detected in the last 24 hours. A total of 8,48,275 people in the state have so far been infected with Covid-19.

With three deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 12,460 Monday.

West Bengal reported 182 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases detected from the state so far to 5,73,762.

Active cases in the state fell to 3,525 Monday. With three deaths reported in the last 24 hours, the state’s Covid-19 death toll rose to 10,249.
