New Delhi:  A video of a 28-year-old man being dragged out of a police van and then lynched by a mob in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli is being widely shared on social media.

The two police personnel present in the vehicle just watch even as the victim — Rajendra Kashyap — is being dragged out and beaten up by the mob.

The incident happened on Monday. Kashyap was rushed to a local hospital where he was declared dead by the evening.

“A case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code has already been registered against six people whom we have managed to identify from the video,” said deputy superintendent of police (Kairana) Rajesh Kumar Tiwari.

An inquiry against the two police personnel who failed to stop the attackers has also been initiated. Their suspension is expected Tuesday evening.

‘Drunk behaviour’

Earlier in the day, UP police received a call on their emergency helpline, 100, for drunk behaviour. They reached the spot in Jhinjhana, a town near Shamli, to arrest Kashyap who was allegedly creating a ruckus there.

“We arrested him because we received a complaint. Woh gaali-galoch kar raha tha (he used abusive words),” said Tiwari.

However, the van was stopped on its way to the police station by an angry mob.

Challan karo iska 151 mein, (IPC 151 deals with unlawful assembly of 5 or more people),” screams a woman in the background in the video as a man thrashes Kashyap who quickly loses consciousness and falls to the ground.
