The top court said it may order a probe by a special investigating team if it found that the evidence provided has been ‘cooked up’.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court Wednesday extended the house arrest of five rights activists, who were arrested from several cities in connection with the Koregaon-Bhima violence case, till tomorrow.
A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud will continue with the hearing tomorrow on the plea filed by historian Romila Thapar and four others.
At the last hearing in the case on 17 September, the top court had said it may order a probe by a special investigating team (SIT) if it found that the evidence has been “cooked up”. It had also said that the material, supporting the arrest of the five activists in the case, needed to be examined. – PTI
My gut feeling is that the police DOES have a case here, but of the routine variety that you can expect wherever the word “Naxals” is mentioned. I am saying so because the Pune police had shown photographs of some “rocket launcher” during their press conference. If any of the five arrested persons has anything to do with it, or the photo belonged to some other case and has been slipped into the present one for some dubious reasons, is something that only the investigation will reveal.
But surely the part about a plot against the prime minister has been added FOR EFFECTS. The cursory way in which the police has proceeded in such a serious matter wouldn’t suggest any other possibility.
