The water samples were being tested since 1 January this year & the trolleys were seized after they were found in violation of norms.

New Delhi: Over 500 licensed water trolleys were seized in north Delhi after samples taken from them were found unfit for consumption, the NDMC said Thursday.

There are 1,623 such trolleys which have been issued licence by the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and they charge Rs 2 for a glass of water.

Generally parked on pavements or other public places, these facilities cater to people, especially the lower-income group in quenching their thirst.

The information was provided by the civic body in response to questions asked by standing committee member and senior Congress leader Mukesh Goel Wednesday during a special meeting of the committee called to discuss preparations for tackling water-borne diseases in the monsoon season.

Civic body officials check the chlorine content of water during inspection of the trollies. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), maximum amount of chlorine allowed in drinking water is 5 mg/l.

These water samples were tested this year starting 1 January and the trolleys were seized by the authorities after they were found in violation of norms, the NDMC said.

“The Health Department has tested samples from 572 trolleys so far and the water has been found unfit for consumption,” Goel said.

“No strict actions have been taken against the owners of these trolleys and just let off after slapping a fine. They have not even ensured that in future these trolley serve clean drinking water,” he alleged.

Goel also sought to link the findings to cases of water-borne diseases in the capital.

Areas under the north corporation have reported 378 cases of diarrhea and 89 of cholera this year till July. And, 3,293 cases of diarrhea and 717 cases of cholera have been reported since 2015.

Goel also demanded that beds in Hindu Rao Hospital earmarked for patients of dengue, malaria and chikungunya, be increased, and provisions be made for life-saving drugs, anti-rabies vaccines and Yellow Fever injection. – PTI

  1. A general observation, your article makes it pretty clear that both UK and US Govt. have identified (to their assessment, which may be disputed after cross verification of documents with Indian counterpart) the number of allegedly illegal immigrants of Indian origin. Such assessments by the UK and US is possible because their respective Govt. keeps track of who is legal and who is not. Similarly, the entire NRC process is being conducted in order to build a verified record of Indian citizens and those entering illegally in the state of Assam, India. So that tomorrow need be, Indian Govt. can correctly identify who has legal rights and who does not. I don’t understand why this needs to be criticized. After the NRC process is finally over maybe you can write another exclusive article with verifiable statistics on the number of illegal immigrants and hope the message is passed on to the Bangladeshi Govt.
Now, why is the NRC process important? The ramifications of illegal immigrants run deep in Assam, India. It’s not only vote bank politics that can steer political agenda with an unaccounted number of voters but 4 million illegal immigrants are immensely burdensome on honest tax paying citizens. Majority of the illegal immigrants fall under the minority category – it is like hitting the Jackpot in India – reservations in schools, colleges, jobs and income tax benefits. All this on the account of taxpaying citizens of the state and country. Moreover, if you care to research on the horrible crimes these illegal immigrants are capable of – encroachment of land, murder, rape, robbery, intolerance towards local traditions and cultures you name it and the list shall go on.
There is a reason why the Supreme Court of India has intervened and allowed a legal and fair process to be carried out in Assam. Before you criticize know the complete background and facts, please. There is no point comparing an Indian judicial process with a western template. We house a billion plus people, our resources are limited, all we are asking for is fair treatment of its own citizens.
