What are we following?

Trump’s nuclear tech plan is under US Congress probe

A Democrats-led Representatives Oversight Committee report in the US Congress notes that some White House officials have been rushing to transfer sensitive nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia as part of the Trump administration’s plan to build nuclear reactors across the Kingdom.

The report alleges that the attempt by US President Donald Trump’s officials to transfer highly sensitive nuclear technology to Saudi may have violated the rules of the Atomic Energy Act.

Without safeguards, technology used for nuclear power plants could be used for developing nuclear weapons.

This is likely to raise more concerns regarding nuclear proliferation through the Middle East, and a renewed nuclear race between Saudi and Iran.

Trade deficit and IPR are not the main differences between US and China

A leaked US document from May 2018 presented the most authoritative account of the differences over trade between China and the US, reported the Financial Times. The document showed that trade deficit reduction and a weak intellectual property rights regime in China are not the most contentious issues for the US.

The document rather suggested that China’s distortionary provision of structural subsidies to its state-owned enterprises, ‘cessation cyber intrusion’ and forcing US companies to transfer technology are the main problem areas.

This leaked document comes ahead of the ninth round of China-US trade talks in Washington this week. Since last year, the global economy has been hit owing to the trade war between the two economic giants.

Eighth Labour MP quits party within two days over Corbyn’s leadership

Citing reasons of growing anti-Semitism in UK’s Labour Party, Joan Ryan became the eighth MP to quit the party in the past 48 hours. In her resignation, Ryan called Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn unfit to lead the party, stating that he and the “Stalinist clique which surrounds him” were not proving the country a real opposition during the time of peak Brexit crisis.

Corbyn has been accused of peddling anti-Jewish sentiment in the Labour Party. Ryan said, “The Labour Party under Jeremy Corbyn has become infected with the scourge of anti-Jewish racism. The problem simply did not exist in the party before his election as leader.”

Ryan has joined the breakaway Independent Group.

Bernie Sanders is going to contest the presidential election, again

Bernie Sanders, the self-claimed proto-socialist Democratic leader from Vermont announced his second presidential bid Tuesday. He said that he has seen rising support for his policies over the past couple of years.

Sanders bid to contest another presidential election reflects two major issues. First, given his participation in the primaries, the Democrats will again be compelled to move dramatically towards the left, isolating the centrist consensus among the party.

Second, if he does succeed to win the Democratic primaries, a deeply polarising and anti-establishment American election might again be on the cards next year.
