New Delhi: On her maiden India visit, First Lady Melania Trump’s choice of an outfit was a chic white jumpsuit with a desi touch.

The silk and gold metallic belt Melania wore is cut from an ‘Indian textile document’.

The outfit’s designer — Herve Pierre — shared a sketch of the design with the caption: “Arriving in India, the First Lady #flotus is wearing a white jumpsuit from @atelier_caito_for_herve_pierre in crème crêpe . The sash was cut in an early XX century Indian textile documents I found in Paris through very good friends who are collectors. @herve_pierre_creative_director . The sash is made out of green silk and gold metallic thread . We used the border which was the most Interesting piece we could use as it was a vintage piece.”

However, this is not the first time a foreign dignitary has donned a dress with an Indian connection on their visit to India.

A nod to Indian designs

During her 2015 visit to India, the former FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States) Michelle Obama had heads turning with her sartorial choice. She had donned a beautiful knee-length floral dress made by the Indian designer Bibhu Mohapatra.

Then it was Kate Middleton’s “subtle nod” to Indian art during her 2016 visit that made the headlines. The Duchess of Cambridge arrived in an Alexander McQueen dress with an Indian tradition print. She also wore Indian designer Anita Dongre’s outfit

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also ranks considerably high when it comes to “breaking out the traditional Indian outfits”.

Trudeau and his entire family donned colourful kurta-pyjamas on their visits to the Sabarmati ashram and the Golden Temple. He didn’t stop there and went all out with an embroidered sherwani which he wore to a meeting with Bollywood actors.
