Kannada actor Chetan Kumar gets 14-day jail for ‘offensive’ tweet on Hindutva

Actor was arrested by Seshadripuram police in Bengaluru Tuesday after a complaint was filed for his tweet, which said Hindutva was built on lies.

New Delhi: Kannada actor Chetan Kumar has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days after the Bengaluru police picked him up Tuesday for an alleged offensive tweet on Hindutva.

The actor was arrested by the Seshadripuram police after a complaint was filed for his tweet, which said Hindutva was built on lies.

In the tweet, the activist actor also said Hindutva could be defeated by ‘truth’, because ‘truth is equality’.

Complainant Shivakumar of Bajrang Dal said the viral tweet hurt sentiments of Hindus.

Kumar faces charges of insulting a religion or religious beliefs and making statements that promote enmity between classes.

A US citizen, Kumar graduated from Yale University in South Asian Studies with an emphasis on Comparative Theatre. He came to Karnataka as a Fulbright scholar in 2005-06 and worked with the National School of Drama.
