New Delhi: The Indian Navy warship INS Satpura arrived Saturday at the San Diego Harbour on the west coast of the United States to hoist the Indian Tricolour on 15 August as part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations, the Navy has announced.
The Satpura will Monday conduct a 75-lap “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav Run” in San Diego, with each lap signifying remembrance of a stalwart of the Indian freedom struggle.
“The visit of INS Satpura to San Diego is also historic as this is the first time an Indian Naval Warship has reached the west coast of North America, thus demonstrating the capability of the Indian Navy to deploy across the globe, when required in support of the national objectives,” the Navy said in a statement Sunday.
The Satpura is one of eight ships that embarked on a journey to make commemorative visits to major ports across six continents, three oceans, and six time zones, as part of the Navy’s celebration of 75 years of India’s independence.
The other seven ships are the INS Chennai and the Betwa that embarked for Muscat, the Saryu for Singapore, the Trikand for Mombasa, the Sumedha for Perth, the Tarkash for Rio de Janeiro, and the Tarangini for London.
The Sumedha and Saryu reached Perth and Singapore respectively on Sunday, while the Tarkash arrived in Rio Saturday, the Navy further announced on social media.

As with the Satpura in San Diego, the other Indian Naval Ships will also perform various activities to mark 75 years of India’s independence.
“At London, the crew of INS Tarangini would be paying homage to the Indian soldiers, who gave the supreme sacrifice during the two World Wars, at the Commonwealth Memorial gates,” the Ministry of Defence had said on 6 August.
“Similarly, a ceremonial wreath laying by the IN ship crew/ delegation is scheduled at Kranji War Memorial and the INA Marker at Singapore. At Mombasa, the IN crew will participate in the inauguration of a commemorative pillar in the Battlefield area of Taita Taveta region where Indian soldiers fought and sacrificed their lives whilst serving under East Africa campaign of World War I,” the defence ministry had said.
