I am a historian, who did a great deal of research in Ayurveda to write a chapter on the history of Surgery and medicine. In order to that, I read Sushruta and several chapters from Charka and Vagabhata. I feel, before making generalization, it is a good idea to read the original sources. Shruti (orally passed knowledge) of Indian traditions encompass several sciences and philosophy. all the examples given above of food items and their curative properties are good examples which have been widely used in India. People did not run to the doctors, every time a child or an adult had an ailment. We used these items (except saffron) and rarely saw a doctor. I still use these and many others items such as neem oil. Most of these food items are packaged in pill forms by big pharma companies and sold at high prices. Food laws are good in general; but food items if these do not work, do not harm either. I strongly suggest that all the Pundits in the field of nutrition and common (read minor) health issues should devote a week for in-depth study of the above mentioned books.
