Uproar over Supreme Court’s ruling on quota in government jobs and promotions underlines the insecurity of the Indian political class thriving on identity issues. 1. There must be a political process in a democracy. Before 5th August, the conventional wisdom has always been that Kashmir is a political problem that requires a political solution. The unspoken message was that – within the four walls of the Constitution – a lot of creativity and compassion were possible. So it was a complete surprise when not only the moth eaten Article 370 was discarded, the state became two union territories, like Pondicherry and Nagar Haveli. All credible politicians who, over the decades, had shared power with the two national parties became outcasts, a threat to national security and public order. The pygmies who are being nurtured in hothouses would not be able to run a village panchayat, leave alone India’s most complex state. 2. There is also an external dimension. We are not carrying conviction with the rest of the world.
