The inauguration of 44 bridges in border areas is great news, not only because they are critical but also because of the timing. India has a long way to go to match China but the new bridges should send the message that New Delhi is committed to boosting border infrastructure.
Jagan targeting SC judge a bad political tactic. Court must resolve this to preserve reputation
Andhra CM Jagan Mohan Reddy has opened a can of worms by publicly accusing a SC judge of corruption and bias. Jagan’s intolerance as CM is growing, but this is an unbecoming political tactic. SC should get to the bottom of this episode in the interest of its own reputation.
It would be indecorous to comment on the merits of the allegation. However, when the Chief Minister of a large state writes officially to the honourable CJI, placing certain grave charges in the public domain, their disposal ought to be by a transparent process that lays the controversy conclusively to rest, one way or another. That level of transparency was not on display while dealing with the allegations made by a lady employee some time back. The head of India’s most powerful public institution should not find himself in an awkward position, in some way vulnerable to the executive. Many people – excluding me – fault the Collegium system for being opaque, a little clubby and inbred. It was conceived at a time when public faith in the SC was total, absolute, blind. That, sadly, is no longer the case. People want justice to be seen to being done, are no longer willing everything at bland face value. One prays the allegations belong in a trash can. However, they must land there after a rigorous, intellectually honest examination.
