Forcing broadcasters to transmit “socially-relevant” programming “of national importance” will drag India back into the dismal era of Doordarshan propaganda broadcasting. Fed up as Indians are with awful TV, government shouldn’t control programming, like China or North Korea do. The remote control belongs in the hands of citizens—not government.

Hope, hype, and optimism aside, India’s T20 World Cup performance is not entirely unexpected. It only comfortably beat Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, and Netherlands–all decidedly weaker teams. The Pakistan match came down to the wire, and India lost outright against strong teams like South Africa and England. Indian T20 needs younger legs.
