Supreme Court’s concerns about process of appointment of CEC/ECs are valid. The present system is non-transparent and gives undue advantage to ruling party. The panel’s recent track record as an impartial agency is hardly inspiring. Merely including the CJI in the process isn’t adequate. It should be a bipartisan exercise.

FTA with Australia good. India needs more bilateral trade deals to avoid RCEP-type groupings

The India-Australia FTA is good news but India must decide and move swiftly on strategies to rekindle sluggish exports. If it wants to avoid regional groupings such as RCEP, it must act faster on more bilateral deals. The Australia FTA, rather than the much-delayed UK one, should become the norm.
