Modi govt right to re-examine sedition provisions. The sooner this colonial law is banished the better

Modi government’s decision to re-examine and reconsider provisions of the sedition law is welcome if it doesn’t send the issue into orbit and buys time. This colonial law is an anachronism when governments have become thin-skinned, vindictive and use it to fix critics. The sooner sedition is banished the better.

Enough lip service to Afghan women’s cause. Sanction Kabul, force Taliban to change policies

The Taliban’s decision to impose the all-enveloping burqa on Afghan women follows a series of barbaric anti-women measures, including tough restrictions on the right to work and education. Instead of mouthing pieties, the international community should reimpose rigorous financial and political sanctions and force Kabul to change its medieval policies.
