Statements by finance ministry officials that the government has no role in looking into the Adani stock rout is no reason to block a Parliament debate on the issue. It’s indeed the remit of SEBI to investigate but open discussions are necessary to strengthen regulatory bodies and calm economic anxieties.

The death penalty handed to the Gorakhnath temple attacker—who mercifully claimed no lives—highlights the need to ensure that capital punishment is not used capriciously. India’s lower courts are giving wildly-varying punishments for like crimes, pointing to arbitrariness in sentencing. Public sentiment cannot be allowed to influence the course of justice.
