The debate over electoral reforms in the Rajya Sabha showed the opposition parties don’t want to learn any lessons from their defeat as they continued to blame EVMs and institutions. They must respect the public mandate for Narendra Modi and introspect about the popular rejection of their brand of politics.

Congress needs an empowered president now, not a figurehead

Rahul Gandhi’s resignation letter blames everyone and everything for Congress’ poll defeat, except himself. This shows why the party needed to look beyond the first family to re-connect with aspirational India. The Congress must now choose an empowered president, not a figurehead to keep the seat warm for the family.

  1. With the EVM s they in 2004 & 2009. But after two elections in a row they blame the EVMs.Also they never gave any concrete proposal of their programmes or welfare measures they proposed to do if voted to power. Raul stressed on Rafale,Rafale & rafale, this to the public is like kettle calling the pot black. The modi announced Rs.2000 to the formers , immediatly Raul says he will give Rs.72000 a year, for the who want bread and butter,, though he promised burger, without knowing, they have never heard about burger,to them promising it yield nothing, that is what happened. He should think positively, and leave negativity. Even now he blames senior’s for defeats, instead, realise that instead of trying to change the he should change himself to suit to the ground situation/ reality. Then may a distant hope. Or perish.

  2. To get a sense of 2019, think of an express train making contact with a herd of elephants. It will take time for the opposition to recover. Other things being equal, it makes sense for them to keep the Index of Unity high. What Ms Mayawati hopes to gain by striking out on her own remains unclear. 2. On legislation, the Opposition should tell the government, We will not be cussed. Whatever good is placed before both Houses, we will pass it, with our suggestions and advice. It would be a gracious gesture for the government to confer LoP status on the Congress leader in the Lok Sabha. There are some statutory duties attached to that post. 3. For both the government and the country, the future is filled with challenges. More will be achieved by reaching out to create consensus.

  3. The identity of the next President will make clear the nature of the transition that is underway in the Congress. No one who has risen through the ranks in the party on the strength of political / electoral merit will fail to give the Gandhi family the respect and honour it deserves. However, if the new chief is seen as someone who serves at their pleasure, does not inspire the rank and file of the party, the exercise will be devoid of meaning.
