Congress MPs’ vehement protest against the move to deny SPG cover to the Gandhi family might be driven by genuine safety concerns but has ended up hurting the party’s image. It has reinforced perceptions about the entitled ways of the party’s First Family and its unshakeable hold on Congress’ imagination.

MP demands for castrating, lynching rapists are ludicrous. Focus on the issue, not crowd-pleasing

MPs demanding chemical castration, lynching & death penalty for rapists shows how knee-jerk our reactions to rape cases are. Such demands are ludicrous and have no place in a civilised society with an established legal framework. MPs should have substantive debates on rape instead of just playing to the gallery.

  1. The day Dr Singh’s SPG cover was withdrawn, the Gandhi family should have surrendered theirs. A responsible government will not place at risk the life of a two term Prime Minister. Whatever security measures were put in place for him should have been good enough for them as well. Instead, by holding on, the message the Gandhis have sent – congruent with how they behaved between 2004 and 2014 – is that we outrank him.

  2. Our prayer to the media would be : Keep the focus on this issue. Asifa’s case in far off Kathua would have been swiftly consigned to oblivion if the national media had not picked up the story. Bahut hua naari par vaar …

  3. Most Indians would share the anguish the honourable Members are expressing, favour a more stringent, effective approach to dealing with this grave problem. Anything consistent with the rule of law and constitutionality would get my vote. India’s women / girls / infants are infinitely more deserving of protection than its unproductive cows. 2. A fine example would be set if MPs who are facing credible allegations of rape are made to resign. Recall the recent instances of Sengar and Nithyananda, how the entire force of the administration rallied to their defence, rather than of the victims. 3. There can be no New India if its women are under daily fear of deadly assault.
