Boycott of Chinese goods kneejerk reaction. India must boost manufacturing, cut reliance on China

The campaign to boycott Chinese goods and government decisions to cancel contracts to Chinese companies are kneejerk reactions. India’s anger after Galwan is justified but it can’t cut off the nose to spite the face. It should use this moment to boost manufacturing and eventually reduce dependence on China’s factories.

  1. Hello

Its very easy saying then doing that is what we all have been hearing when someone gives us advise. Such is the case in this regard “Boycott Chinese goods”
These three words are making rounds in the internet apart from the usual (Covid) situation but are we as a second largest populated country in the world ready to boycott the first largest well, data and the survey conducted by TOI and LocalCircles says so 87% Indians ready to boycott Chinese products for next one year and even PM also insisting on aatmnirbhar bharat surely thats saying something but the question now is can we.? the other data which I am to show says otherwise Chinese investors have already cornered major stake in 18 out of India’s top 30 Unicorns. The companies which have major Chinese investments include Big Basket, Byju’s, Delhivery, Dream 11, Flipkart, Hike, MakeMyTrip, Ola, Oyo, Paytm, Paytm Mall, PolicyBazzar, Quikr, Rivigo, Snapdeal, Swiggy, Uddan, Zomato among many more. TikTok has emerged as the showstopper social media app in 2019 as well. Since January 2019, the app has been installed more than 104.7 million times with India accounting for 44% (323 million) of 2019’s total TikTok app downloads. These are some of the facts the list goes on. So now, coming back to the question can we (Indians) really do it? well I hope so we were the ones who let Chinese goods enter our market let we be the ones to force them out and in this regard history also supports us we also let Britishers into our soil and we were the ones that force them out it took time (quite a lot) to be honest and many sacrifices were made but we did it. One can only hope Chinese goods will meet the same fate.

  2. The boycott of Chinese goods has to come from the people, because it will mean paying more for worst quality to start with until the manufactures improve both the quality and cost.
Any initiative by the government to boycott will lead to many more Fiats, Ambassadors, Vespas and likes to prosper again in the warmth of the protected market free to rob the consumer.

  3. How can I shorten the line of others? Obviously a few will answer that to make my line big. That will be a correct and logical answer. But in our daily life, we do just the opposite. We remain busy to rub the line of others to get it short. As nowadays we are doing the same to boycott the products if India to show our Nationalism.
It is true that China has captured the world market. The country is a manufacturing hub. We have to manufacture superior quality items to allure the consumers. How can a customer be forced to buy a product of cheap quality at a higher price?
In India, an industrialist faces a lot of problems. The nexus of Government officers, the delay tactics of Government Offices, corruption at every level, lack infrastructure, trade unionism, vote bank politics etc. cannot bring our manufactures at the same footing with their Chinese counterparts.
There is no doubt that our manufactures can make products of superior quality. They should show concerns for their fellow citizens. Our society also needs to develop the dignity of labour and work ethics. We have to create a conducive environment for our manufacturers and it is the responsibility of everyone, to be honest, punctual, responsible, and rational to make our nation great.

  4. Completely agree with the second part. But the immediate reaction howsoever unjust it may seem now is also required. India needs a fast, fluid and multi pronged approach to this challenge. The half hearted approaches to Make in India would not work any more. The industry and the institutes in India need to sit together immediately, chalk out a plan with the government targeting as much as possible all the high value imports from China and start looking at either indigenous manufacturing . There is an urgent need to seriously look at intellectual rights and hasten the process . A look at patents across the sectors since 2000 would show a very sorry state of affairs in India. Talent needs to be encouraged and recognized. Enough of chaining down talent and forcing them to move abroad. Government needs to go for a kill in the manufacturing sector with low tax rates, single window clearances and tax holidays for startups which employ large labor force.

  5. Sorry. I completely disagree. We must boycott all Chinese goods and services to the maximum extent possible. We can well do without their cheap stuff, at least at an individual level.

    • You may well do without Chinese cheap stuff, but not many others. Read the quote from a report in edia today: “New Delhi: OnePlus, a China-based smartphone maker, saw its latest model sold off within minutes in India on Thursday, despite growing calls for boycott of Chinese goods following a border conflict between the Asian neighbors. The OnePlus 8 Pro mobile phone, which is priced at a significant discount to Apple Inc.’s latest iPhones, was not available on Amazon.com Inc.’s local website just a few minutes after it went on sale. At the same time, #BoycottChineseProducts was among the top Twitter trends in India for almost two days, after the nation’s army said at least 20 of its soldiers lost their lives in a violent standoff with Chinese troops in a contested Himalayan border.”

And where is the government going to get defense-related supplies if it stops Chinese imports. ” The Ministry of Defence contacted manufacturers of bullet-proof jackets worn by Army personnel in forward areas, including in Leh, for “urgent” reinforcement of supplies in light of growing tensions with China. However, a majority of the existing Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) use Chinese raw materials, including the company that got the 2017 contract for supplying 1.86 lakh bullet-proof jackets to the Army”.
