The Modi government’s decision to impose stock limits and fix a minimum export price of onions is neither good politics nor good economics. It will hurt farmers and protect urban consumers. The correct policy response to seasonal onion politics is to develop scientific storage facilities and improve supply chain management.

  1. Two major objectives should be to reduce spoilage of fruits / vegetables and trying to get a higher percentage of what the urban consumer pays to the farmer.
