Full statehood for a national capital in a federal system is impossible. Delhi should be restored to its earlier union territory status but with an elected Mayoralty with greater municipal powers outside of the Lutyens (NDMC) zone. Or its 1.6 crore people will continue being crushed between feuding politicians.

Modi and BJP are seriously hurting India’s federalism

Smiling pictures of the Prime Minister and chief ministers of non-BJP states look great for Indian federalism. The reality is different. Our centre-state relations are the most strained since the ’80s. The Prime Minister should reflect on how his and his party’s campaign style is damaging our federalism.

AAP doesn’t get Punjab, its history or the dangers of courting radicals

Unfortunately, AAP still doesn’t appreciate the peril in courting radical religious forces in Punjab. Possibly, it isn’t a state they understand well, nor have they read its history. There’s a motivated, diabolical campaign to revive radicalism in gurudwaras in Pakistan, Canada and Europe. It’s Punjab unit can’t be playing along.

It’s time SC declared its innings against BCCI

Judicially-mandated dictatorship over cricket is grossly unjust. Instead of reforming, it’s made BCCI so opaque, R&AW and IB look transparent in comparison. As Anand Vasu’s brave piece in ThePrint shows, it is now harming Indian cricket. The court should declare its innings closed. More important cases await its attention.

Everyone’s lost the Kashmir plot

The failure of the Ramzan truce in Kashmir is as much a reflection of the leaderless, rudderless conflagration as it is of the Modi government’s inconsistent policies. Mainstream parties and the Hurriyat have lost control of the state’s youths who are running amok. More violence and bloodshed seem inevitable.
