PM Modi says in an interview to Gulf News that he sleeps soundly every night and finds social media ‘extremely vibrant’.

New Delhi: As he embarks on his historic visit to Palestine, Oman and the UAE, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said he has not been on a holiday since he became chief minister of Gujarat in 2001

“I have not been on a holiday either as chief minister or now as Prime Minister,” Modi said in an interview to Gulf News.

“However, my work does require me to travel across India and interact with people, learn about their joys, sorrows and aspirations. This is refreshing and rejuvenating for me,” the PM added.

Modi will be the first Indian PM to visit Palestine.

Despite being known to be a 24×7 politician in a country which sees elections every few months, Modi said he manages a “sound sleep” every night and has no trouble falling asleep.

“My sleep cycle varies from four to six hours, depending on the workload. But I get a sound sleep every night. In fact, I fall asleep minutes after hitting the bed,” he said in the interview.

Asked what is the first thing he does every morning, Modi said he began his day with yoga.

“My day begins with yoga as I think it is extremely beneficial for the mind and body. It refreshes me and keeps me agile through the day,” he said

“My morning is also spent scanning newspapers, checking e-mails and making a round of phone calls. I also spend time reading some comments and feedback shared by citizens on the ‘Narendra Modi Mobile App,” the PM added.

“I find it a wonderful way to remain connected with people across India.”

A vegetarian, Modi said he does not have a special cook to travel with him and eats whatever is served to him

“I am not much of a foodie. I enjoy a simple vegetarian meal every day…There is no special butler who travels with me on my trips,” Modi said.

“I happily eat whatever the gracious hosts prepare and enjoy eating everything offered to me,” he said.

When asked about the favourite day of the week, Modi sounded an optimistic note. “Today is my favourite day of the week! I believe in a simple tenet — make the most of today, live life to the fullest. Today is the only day on our hands to work hard and make things happen,” he said.

PM Modi, known to have used social media effectively to further his party’s electoral ambitions and connect with people, said he finds social media “extremely vibrant”.

“Technology is a wonderful way to connect with young India and it gives a glimpse of their aspirations,” he said.

“Personally, I am active on social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube) and I find them to be extremely vibrant. I constantly check messages on my mobile app, the ‘Narendra Modi Mobile App’,” he added.

The Prime Minister said Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Babasaheb Ambedkar and Benjamin Franklin have inspired him.
