PM Modi asks MPs to hold ‘lunch meetings’ to develop proximity with party workers and voters of their constituencies.

New Delhi: BJP president Amit Shah Friday asked party MPs to work at the grassroots level saying there is just a “year” left for elections – a possible hint that early elections are unlikely as some have been speculating.

Speaking at the BJP parliamentary party meet, Shah asked his MPs to pull up their socks and start reaching out to the electorate in their respective constituencies. Shah has also asked them to make sure that they highlight only relevant issues, which voters can relate to.

“He (Shah) said that we should not speak at length about Ujjwala Yojana (a scheme meant for economically weaker section) in posh colonies. Similarly, we have to see what schemes should be laid out in front of rural people,” a party source told ThePrint.

“He said the MPs need to see what schemes would interest whom and to carefully choose their topic in such gatherings,” the source added.

Shah is also believed to have asked his party MPs to start gearing up for the polls as they have just a year to communicate about the schemes and work done by the government to the voters.

“What we could deduce from his speech is that there is no possibility of an early election,” the BJP source said.

In his address to the MPs, PM Narendra Modi urged them to spread the positive points mentioned in this year’s Budget among the people. Modi asked them to hold “lunch meetings” with party workers and voters wherein important issues would be discussed over homemade food.

The PM referred to his “tiffin meetings” in Varanasi and said it was an experiment worth trying. He said such informal meetings bring the public representative and his audience closer.

“Every MP should hold one lunch meeting in his/her constituency,” the source quoted Modi as saying.

Referring to the BJP’s loss in the Rajasthan bypolls, Modi asked MPs not to be perturbed by this result. “We will do good. And we will win Tripura also,” Modi was quoted as saying.

“Despite CPI(M) blocking trucks and buses that were supposed to bring in people to BJP rallies in Tripura, huge crowds gathered. It’s a positive sign,” the PM told the MPs referring to BJP’s aggressive campaigning in the poll-bound state.
