Senior journalists condemn killing of Tripura journalist Santanu Bhowmik, urge Centre to take note of the string of recent attacks on mediapersons.

The killing of Tripura journalist Santanu Bhowmik continues to evoke outrage across the country. Condemning the incident, the Editors’ Guild of India has demanded that Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar bring the assailants to justice and make sure that precautions are taken to safeguard journalists in the state.

Bhowmik worked with a local TV channel in Tripura, and was attacked and killed by a mob in Mandai, 35km from the state capital, Agartala. The mob comprising cadres of a tribal outfit had gathered in Mandai despite Section 144 having been imposed on the area since Tuesday.

“Police present on the scene allegedly did not do anything to stop Bhowmik’s murder,” the Guild said in a statement issued Thursday.

Referring to Bengaluru journalist Gauri Lankesh’s murder on 5 September, the Guild urged the central government to take note of the string of recent attacks on mediapersons and ensure that state governments take necessary steps to protect reporters.
